Scottish Alternative Games

The Games

Gird 'n' Cleek

This is traditionally Scottish but has spread to many countries by emigrating Scots with each country often creating a new name for it. Most Girds are iron hoops about 3 ft. in diameter (0.91 m) and, traditionally, the driving cleek is a separate instrument for guiding it. The course is oval and the competition is in the form of a race.

Hurlin' the Curlin' Stane

A contest to see who can throw a curling stone the furthest (on dry land!)

Tractor pull

Pulling a 1960 Massey Fergusson 35 Tractor for 20 yards.

Tossin' the Sheaf

This is a real energy test and also needs skill. The aim is to throw the sheaf as high as possible.

Snail Racing

This is really a side-show and a bit of fun when you can bet on which snail will reach the edge of the circular arena first!
